Bay Area Game Jam Recap

On April 4th and 5th, Wild Pockets hosted the Bay Area Game Jam, sponsored by Microsoft, Crispy Gamer, and Super Rewards.

Teams were given 24 hours to create a single level or prototype game using Wild Pockets, the newest 3D game engine. The teams were competing for a grand prize of $2,500 and distribution on Crispy Gamer’s BYOG site. Over 80 developers participated in a weekend of fun, competition, creativity and very little sleep!

The event kicked off with two keynote speakers that included Andrew Sheppard from Hi5 and Marc LeBlanc from Mind Control Software, who set the stage for success and innovation in 24 hours. Following the kick-off participants were given a one hour tutorial, and for many attendees this was their first glimpse into the new platform.

The event was a tremendous success with fantastic facilities and food provided by Microsoft throughout the event. The participants worked in teams of 1 to 6 people, and had access to the Wild Pockets engineering team for support and questions throughout the event. The event wasn’t all work; there were plenty of opportunities to take a break and network. Participants could play Halo, Scene It or Lips on Xbox 360’s in the Microsoft Home Lounge. They could also enjoy a special concert featuring The Megas and The OneUps who play variations of video game music and themes.

At 12:30pm sharp on Sunday afternoon, 21 final games were submitted for judging. The games were reviewed by an esteemed panel of judges, including Anne-Marie Roussel of Microsoft, Robert Ashley of Crispy Gamer and A Life Well Wasted, Jesse Manuel of Super Rewards, Jameson Hsu of Mochi Media, Andrew Sheppard of Hi5, Alan Yu of ngmoco and Lars Butler of Trion Worlds. Through a thorough process of rating and reviews, the winners were selected:

1st place
Lava Ball by Daniel Bryner, Bradley Johnson and Chris Webb

2st place
Save the Boy by Aaron lo, Soo Jeong Bae, Heegun Lee, Ivan Ortega, Hua-Wei Sung

2st place
Bumper Bash by Anthony Abrams and Shannon Abrams
